1.1 A bill for an act
1.2 relating to education; allowing a school year to start before Labor Day for two
1.3 school years; requiring a report.
1.4BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA:
1.5 Section 1. SCHOOL START DATE FOR THE 2025-2026 AND 2026-2027 SCHOOL
1.6YEARS ONLY.
1.7 (a) Notwithstanding Minnesota Statutes, section 120A.40, or other law to the contrary,
1.8for the 2025-2026 and 2026-2027 school years only, a school board may vote to begin the
1.9school year before Labor Day.
1.10 (b) A district that begins the school year before Labor Day under this section must report
1.11its start date to the commissioner of education in the form and manner determined by the
1.12commissioner. By January 5, 2027, the commissioner must submit a report to the legislative
1.13committees with jurisdiction over kindergarten through grade 12 education listing the school
1.14districts that began the 2025-2026 or 2026-2027 school year after Labor Day.
1.15 EFFECTIVE DATE.This section is effective the day following final enactment.
