Thisbillchangesthelawsregardingphysicaltherapistssothat
physicaltherapistsnolongerneedaprescriptionorreferralfrom
adoctorinordertoevaluateandinitiatetreatmentonapatient,
aslongasthephysicaltherapisthasaDoctorateofPhysical
TherapyDegreeorhasfiveyearsofclinicalpracticeasaphysical
therapist. However,thebilldoesrequireaphysicaltherapistto
refertoanapprovedhealthcareprovideranypatientwhose
conditionisbeyondthephysicaltherapist'sscopeofpractice,or
anypatientwhodoesnotdemonstratemeasurableorfunctional
improvementafter10visitsor21businessdays,whicheveroccurs
first.
Thephysicaltherapistmustalsoconsultwithanapprovedhealth
careproviderbeforecontinuingtherapyifafter10visitsor21
businessdays,whicheveroccursfirst,thepatienthasdemonstrated
measurableorfunctionalimprovementfromthephysicaltherapyand
thephysicaltherapistbelievesthatcontinuationofphysical
therapyisnecessary. Continuedphysicaltherapymustbein
accordancewithanydirectionofthehealthcareprovider. The
physicaltherapistmustnotifythehealthcareproviderof
continuingphysicaltherapyevery30days.Thebillremovesa
provisionthatallowstheStateBoardofRegistrationforthe
HealingArtstofileacomplaintagainstaphysicaltherapistwho
providesphysicaltherapywithoutaprescription.
