FISCAL ANALYSIS
ASSUMPTION
§260.558 – Radioactive Waste Investigation Fund
Officials from the Department of Natural Resources (DNR)
fiscal impact on their organization.
DNR notes the Radioactive Waste Investigation Fund (0560) has had no transfers or
expenditures in the past three fiscal years.
Per the FY 2026 DNR Budget Request book, Oversight notes DNR requested a transfer of
$150,000 from the Hazardous Waste Fund to the Radioactive Waste Investigation Fund as DNR
anticipates requests to investigate for radioactive waste.
Oversight notes the proposal removes the $150,000 cap on transfers to and expenditures from
the fund; however, Oversight is not certain which fund the transfer would come from. For
simplicity, Oversight will assume a $0 (no additional expenditures from the fund) to an
“Unknown” amount of additional expenditures from the fund for investigation costs. Oversight
assumes the unknown amount will be greater than $250,000.
Oversight also notes the Radioactive Waste Investigation Fund has had no activity in at least the
past nine fiscal years.

FISCAL DESCRIPTION
Currently, the allowed transfer from the Hazardous Waste Fund to the Radioactive Waste
Investigation Fund is capped at $150,000 per fiscal year and the investigation costs cannot
exceed $150,000 per fiscal year. This bill repeals these restrictions.
The bill also requires the Department of Natural Resources to seek reimbursement of expenses
incurred during radioactive waste cleanup form any Federal agency responsible for the site.
This legislation is not federally mandated, would not duplicate any other program and would not
require additional capital improvements or rental space.
