Currently,membersoftheGeneralAssemblycanservenomorethan
eightyearstotalinanyonechamberofthelegislature,normore
than16totalinbothchambers.
BeginningDecember5,2030,uponvoterapproval,this
constitutional amendmentwouldremovethesinglechamber
prohibition,allowingmembersoftheGeneralAssemblytoserveno
morethan16yearstotalineitherchamberofthelegislature.
Theresolutionalsoprohibitsanypersonfromservingmorethan
fouryearsasSpeakeroftheHouseofRepresentatives andmorethan
fouryearsasPresidentProTemoftheSenate.

PROPONENTS: Supporterssaythattermlimitsincreasethepowerof
politicalleadershipandlobbyistsattheexpenseofthe
institutionalknowledgeofthemembersservinginthelegislature.
Someofthesupposedbenefitsoftermlimits,likeincreasing
diversityamongmembers,nevermaterialized. Careerpublicservice
bringsmanyadvantages,inthesamewaycareerexperienceinany
otherfieldwould.Termlimitsencourageelectedofficialsto
constantlyseeknewopportunitiestoserveratherthanallowing
themtofocusonexcellinginthesameroleforalongtime.
