FIRST REGULAR SESSION SENATE BILL NO. 192 103RD GENERAL ASSEMBLY INTRODUCED BY SENATOR MAY. 0101S.02I KRISTINA MARTIN, Secretary AN ACT To repeal sections 57.010 and 57.530, RSMo, and to enact in lieu thereof two new sections relating to the sheriff of the City of St. Louis. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of Missouri, as follows: Section A. Sections 57.010 and 57.530, RSMo, are repealed 1 and two new sections enacted in lieu thereof, to be known as 2 sections 57.010 and 57.530, to read as follows:3 57.010. 1. At the general election to be held in 1 1948, and at each general election held every four years 2 thereafter, the voters in every county in this state shall 3 elect some suitable person sheriff. No person shall be 4 eligible for the office of sheriff who has been convicted of 5 a felony. Such person shall be a resident taxpayer and 6 elector of said county, shall have resided in said county 7 for more than one whole year next before filing for said 8 office and shall be a person capab le of efficient law 9 enforcement. When any person shall be elected sheriff, such 10 person shall enter upon the discharge of the duties of such 11 person's office as chief law enforcement officer of that 12 county on the first day of January next succeeding sai d 13 election. 14 2. No person shall be eligible for the office of 15 sheriff who does not hold a valid peace officer license 16 pursuant to chapter 590. Any person filing for the office 17 of sheriff shall have a valid peace officer license at the 18 SB 192 2 time of filing for office. This subsection shall not apply 19 to the sheriff of any county of the first classification 20 with a charter form of government with a population over 21 nine hundred thousand or of any city not within a county. 22 3. The sheriff of any cit y not within a county shall 23 be required to hold a valid peace officer license pursuant 24 to chapter 590 within two years of being elected as sheriff. 25 57.530. The sheriff of the City of St. Louis shall, 1 with the approval of a majority o f the circuit judges of the 2 circuit court of said city, appoint as many deputies and 3 assistants as may be necessary to perform the duties of his 4 or her office[, and ]. The annual compensation for 5 sheriff's deputies shall be no less than fifty thousand 6 dollars. The sheriff shall fix the compensation for [their 7 services] deputy assistants, which compensation, however, 8 shall not in any case exceed the annual rate of compensation 9 fixed by the board of aldermen of the City of St. Louis 10 therefor. 11
