                    MISSISSIPPI LEGISLATURE 2025 Regular Session To: Local and Private Legislation By: Representative Barnett House Bill 1959 AN ACT TO REENACT AND AMEND CHAPTER 958, LOCAL AND PRIVATE LAWS OF 2016, AS AMENDED BY CHAPTER 910, LOCAL AND PRIVATE LAWS OF 2020, TO EXTEND THE REPEALER UNTIL JULY 1, 2029, ON THE PROVISION OF LAW THAT AUTHORIZES THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF WAYNE COUNTY, MISSISSIPPI, TO LEVY AN ASSESSMENT, IN ADDITION TO ANY OTHER ASSESSMENTS AND COURT COSTS, FOR CIVIL CASES FILED AND MISDEMEANOR CONVICTIONS IN ITS JUSTICE COURT TO BE USED TO FUND THE CONSTRUCTION, OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE OF A NEW COUNTY OFFICE BUILDING TO BE KNOWN AS THE "WAYNE COUNTY JUSTICE COMPLEX"; AND FOR RELATED PURPOSES.      BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI:      SECTION 1.  Chapter 958, Local and Private Laws of 2016, as amended by Chapter 910, Local and Private Laws of 2020, is amended as follows:      Section 1.  (1)  The Board of Supervisors of Wayne County, Mississippi, in its discretion, is authorized, by resolution duly adopted, to levy an assessment, in addition to any other assessments and court costs in the Justice Court of Wayne County as follows:           (a)  An amount not to exceed Fifty Dollars ($50.00) for each conviction or nonadjudication under the Mississippi Implied Consent Law; and           (b)  An amount not to exceed Twenty-five Dollars ($25.00) on each misdemeanor conviction other than those specified in paragraph (a) of this subsection or each civil case filed.      (2)  The avails of the additional assessment imposed under subsection (1) of this section shall be expended by the Board of Supervisors of Wayne County to fund the construction, operation, maintenance and related needs of a new county office building, to be known as the "Wayne County Justice Complex."      (3)  Collections of revenue made under this section from and after July 1, 2024, and until the effective date of House Bill No. , 2025 Regular Session, are hereby ratified and confirmed and the expenditures that may have been made by the county of such revenue that was paid to the county are hereby ratified and confirmed.  Any of such revenue paid to the county and held in escrow by the county may be expended by the county for the purposes authorized in this section.      ( * * *34)  This section shall be repealed from and after July 1, * * *2024 2029.      SECTION 2.  This act shall take effect and be in force from and after its passage.
