                    MISSISSIPPI LEGISLATURE 2025 Regular Session To: Rules By: Representatives Hall, Mangold House Resolution 85 (As Adopted by House) A RESOLUTION HONORING THE LIFE AND SERVICE OF COMMAND SERGEANT MAJOR PLEZ WILLIAM SUMMERS III AND MEMORIALIZING THE DEDICATION OF THE EAST GATE ENTRANCE TO CAMP SHELBY IN HIS HONOR.      WHEREAS, with great distinction, the East Gate entrance to Camp Shelby will now be known and referred to as the "CSM Summers' East Gate" 3111'46"N 8910'58"W; and      WHEREAS, the honor of naming this gate is properly bestowed in memoriam of Command Sergeant Major (CSM) Plez William Summers III who lost his life in performance of his duties on June 14, 2024, while serving as the Command Sergeant Major of Camp Shelby Joint Forces Training Center; and       WHEREAS, because the one year anniversary of his passing is June 14, 2025, the Mississippi Guard will host a ceremony in his honor later this year; and      WHEREAS, CSM Summers enlisted in the Mississippi Army National Guard in 1988, and upon completing Basic Training, he enrolled in ROTC at Jackson State University, where he earned his Commission in 1990; and      WHEREAS, in November 2002, he resigned his Commission, and accepted an enlisted full-time Active Guard and Reserve position with the MSARNG; and      WHEREAS, he was a 1986 graduate of Brookhaven High School, where he earned a football scholarship to Mississippi College, where he was a member of the 1989 Division II National Champion Football Team, and graduated in 1990 with a bachelor of science in physical education and a minor in criminal justice; and      WHEREAS, his military education included Basic Training, Infantry Officers Basic Course, Infantryman Advanced Noncommissioned Officer Course, Bradley Master Gunner Course (Honor Graduate), and the United States Army Sergeants Major Academy; and      WHEREAS, CSM Summers' distinguished career was marked by his numerous awards and decorations, which are a testament to his exceptional service, and amongst his accolades are two Bronze Star Medals, two Meritorious Service Medals, five Army Commendation Medals, the Combat Infantryman Badge, Parachutist Badge, Master Gunner Badge, and the Order of St. Maurice, along with numerous other federal and state awards which reflect his dedication and commitment to his duty, inspiring pride and honor in all who knew him; and      WHEREAS, CSM Summers served in numerous assignments, including the 20th Special Forces Group and 1-155 Infantry Battalion, as both Company Executive Officer and Company Commander; and      WHEREAS, in September 2001, he was deployed to Bosnia SFOR X rotation as Company Commander of Company B, 1-155 Infantry Battalion, and upon his return, accepted an AGR Training NCO position at Company A, 1-155 Infantry Battalion; and      WHEREAS, he has also served as Company Master Gunner, Unit Readiness NCO, Platoon Sergeant (Operation Iraqi Freedom), Battalion Master Gunner, Battalion Master Gunner (Operation Iraqi Freedom), First Sergeant D/1-155 IN (Operation Iraqi Freedom), JFH State Master Gunner, 66th Troop Command Operations Sergeants Major, 1-155th CAB Command Sergeants Major, 155th Operations Sergeants Major; and       WHEREAS, to cherish his memory and carry on his legacy of love and devotion, he leaves his loving wife of 21 years, Amy, their son Jorden, and two daughters, Josephine and Annabelle, of Brookhaven, Mississippi; and      WHEREAS, it is most appropriate to honor the sacrifice of Mississippi serviceman, such as CSM Summers whose commitment to his family and his service to our country and the great State of Mississippi is a testament to his character, which made him a true American hero and a proud Mississippian:      NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby honor the life and service of Command Sergeant Major Plez William Summers III, and memorialize the dedication of the East Gate entrance to Camp Shelby in his honor as the "CSM Plez William Summers III East Gate".      BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to the family of CSM Summers, the leadership of Camp Shelby and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
