MISSISSIPPI LEGISLATURE 2025 Regular Session To: Rules By: Senator(s) Blackmon, Michel Senate Resolution 83 A RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE GERMANTOWN HIGH SCHOOL MAVERICKS BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM AND HEAD COACH CHRIS LOVE FOR THEIR FIRST WINNING SEASON, FIRST STATE TOURNAMENT APPEARANCE AND FIRST MHSAA CLASS 7A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP. WHEREAS, Germantown defeated Madison Central 69-52 to win the MHSAA Class 7A State Championship, the first in program history; WHEREAS, the Mavericks were led by Jackson State signee Mike Williams, who scored a game-high 22 points. This was the fourth meeting between the two teams this season, with Germantown winning all four games; and WHEREAS, Williams and his brother, junior guard Mason Williams, transferred from Jackson Academy last season, where the two helped the Raiders win a MAIS championship. Now, the two leave Mississippi Coliseum as champions in both organizations. The Williams brothers are among the first in Mississippi high school basketball history to win state titles in both MAIS and MHSAA; and WHEREAS, the 2024-2025 season was Germantown's first winning season in program history, its first appearance in a boys state title game and it added the program's first title. Germantown (29-5) played through four lead changes early in the first quarter, but a second-half surge saw a lead as large as 24 points; and WHEREAS, Coach Love said it was a challenge, facing a Region 2 rival for another time, especially in a state title game, which he says is arguably the most challenging in the state. "It's difficult; we play in the toughest district in the state, Love said. "It's just hard to be a well-coached team four times." Third-year Coach Love said, "We worked harder and eventually got over that hump this year ... We told them what we came here for. We came here to win the state championship. Not just to come in and win a few ball games, we came to win the championship.
