Referred to: *DRH40011 -LUe-16* A BILL TO BE ENTITLED 1 AN ACT TO EXTEND THE TERM OF THE MAYOR FOR THE TOWN OF MADISON 2 FROM TWO YEARS TO FOUR YEARS. 3 The General Assembly of North Carolina enacts: 4 SECTION 1. Section 3.3(a) of the Charter of the Town of Madison, being Chapter 5 289 of the 1973 Session Laws, as amended by S.L. 2004-54, reads as rewritten: 6 "(a) The members of the Board of Aldermen and the Mayor shall serve for terms of four 7 years, and the Mayor shall serve for a term of two years, years beginning the day and hour of the 8 organizational meeting following their election, as established by ordinance in accordance with 9 this Charter; provided, they shall serve until their successors are elected and qualify. In the 2005 10 municipal election, six members shall be elected. The three persons receiving the highest 11 numbers of votes shall receive four-year terms, and the three persons receiving the next highest 12 numbers of votes shall receive two-year terms. In 2007 and biennially thereafter, three members 13 shall be elected for four-year terms. In the 2025 municipal election and quadrennially thereafter, 14 the Mayor shall be elected for a four-year term." 15 SECTION 2. Section 4.1 of the Charter of the Town of Madison, being Chapter 289 16 of the 1973 Session Laws, reads as rewritten: 17 "Sec. 4.1. Regular Municipal Elections. Regular municipal elections shall be held biennially 18 in odd-numbered years on the day set by general law for municipal elections. In each election, 19 the candidate for Mayor who receives the largest number of votes cast for Mayor shall be declared 20 elected for a term of two four years and the six candidates for Alderman who receive the largest 21 number of votes cast for Alderman shall be declared elected for terms of two four years." 22 SECTION 3.
