GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF NORTH CAROLINA SESSION 2025 H D HOUSE BILL DRH30014-NM-12 Short Title: Oriental Election Changes - Even Years. (Local) Sponsors: Representative Kidwell. Referred to: *DRH30014 -NM-12* A BILL TO BE ENTITLED 1 AN ACT TO PROVIDE THAT REGULAR MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS IN THE TOWN OF 2 ORIENTAL SHALL BE HELD IN EVEN -NUMBERED YEARS. 3 The General Assembly of North Carolina enacts: 4 SECTION 1.(a) Section 5 of the Charter of the Town of Oriental, being Chapter 184 5 of the Private Laws of 1899, reads as rewritten: 6 "Section 5. That there shall be held on the First Monday in May, eighteen hundred and ninety-7 nine, and on the first May every year thereafter, an election for mayor and commissioners for 8 said town at some convenient place therein, to be selected by the commissioners, which election 9 shall be held by a registrar and two poll holders under regulations in other respects prescribed by 10 the state election law, which from time to tome may be enacted – at which election, all duly 11 qualified voters of the State of North Carolina under the state election laws existing at the time 12 of such election, residing in the corporate limits of said town, shall be permitted to 13 vote.Beginning in 2026, regular municipal elections shall be held on the Tuesday after the first 14 Monday in November of each even-numbered year in accordance with the uniform municipal 15 election laws of North Carolina. In 2026 and biennially thereafter, a mayor and five town 16 commissioners shall be selected by the qualified voters of the town to each serve two-year terms." 17 SECTION 1.(b) In the 2025 municipal election, the mayor and five town 18 commissioners shall be elected for a one-year term. Beginning in 2026, municipal elections shall 19 be conducted in the Town of Oriental in even-numbered years and biennially thereafter. 20 SECTION 2.
