LB 256 is the Midwest Interstate Passenger Rail Compact.
Section 1 provides a statement of purpose for the Compact and establishes a commission. T he commission shall consist of 4 resident
members of each state.
Commission duties include, among other things, developing a long-term, interstate plan for high- speed rail passenger service .
Section 2 prohibits the State of Nebraska from participating in any rail project or appropri ate money for any rail project proposed by the
Compact, unless the specific project is authorized by the enactment of a legislative bill.
Section 3 creates the Midwest Interstate Passenger Rail Com pact Cash Fund. The fund shall consist of “ gifts, grants, or bequests from
any source, including federal, state, public, and private sources, and may consist of money transferred by the Legislature.”
No fiscal impact.
