The following constitutes the reasons for this bill and the purposes which are sought to be
accomplished thereby:
LB505 would provide Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) federal funding for
food assistance to qualifying Nebraska families. In 2023, the Nebraska Legislature approved
the use of $10M in TANF funds for grants to nonprofit organizations (the two Nebraska Food
Banks and Catholic Social Services) that provide food assistance in ten or more counties in
Nebraska and qualify for the Emergency Food Assistance Program under the US Department
of Agriculture. LB505 would continue the grant program due to the critical food insecurity
challenges being experienced by families all across the state.
