€ One Hundred Ninth Legislature - First Session - 2025 Introducer€s Statement of Intent LB506 € Chairperson: Senator Carolyn Bosn Committee: Judiciary Date of Hearing: February 20, 2025 € The following constitutes the reasons for this bill and the purposes which are sought to be accomplished thereby: Radon is a cancer-causing natural radioactive gas with no odor or taste that can build up in homes. It is the second leading cause of lung cancer. Nebraska has a very high incidence of radon in homes and businesses, with over half of radon tests conducted showing high radon levels that require mitigation.€ € The legislature has enacted radon-resistant building codes for new homes built after 2019 (Neb. Rev. Stat. 76-3504), and prospective buyers of older homes have some statutory protection in Neb. Rev. Stat. 76-2, 120, which requires sellers of residential property to disclose known radon problems and provide copies of any radon tests that have been conducted on the property. Yet, no such protection exists in statute for renters.€€ LB 506 is intended to provide tenants with information and certain limited rights they may exercise to protect themselves from potential radon exposure in a rental unit. The bill would not require landlords to conduct or pay for radon testing or mitigation in a dwelling unit, only to disclose information about radon hazards to prospective tenants. € € Principal Introducer:________________________________ Senator Megan Hunt - 1 -
