This bill expands eligibility for the Rural Health Systems and Profess ional Incentive Act to Dietitian Nutritionists. Newly eligible Dietitian
Nutritionists can receive repayment for qualified educational debts up to $15,000 per year per recipient. This bill would not necessarily
increase the funding for the program though an accompanying appropriations bill could do so. Without additional funding, the
administering agency, the Department of Health and Human Services, may decrease per capita repayments or utilize a waitlist.

Explanation of Estimate:
LB553 adds the health profession “Dietitian Nutritionist” to the Health Professions Tracking Service (HPTS).
The Division of Public Health will need to provide any relevant information that the Rural Health Advisory
Commission (RHAC) needs in order to set up shortage area requirements for this new profession.
An addendum to the existing contract with HPTS will need to be added to track “ Dietitian Nutritionist,”
additional funding will be required to set up the program, and a new option will need to be added to the existing
REDCap application.
