SYNOPSIS

     Requires instruction on cursive handwriting in public school curriculum for grades three through five.

 

CURRENT VERSION OF TEXT 

     As reported by the Assembly Education Committee on March 10, 2025, with amendments.

   

 An Act concerning instruction on cursive handwriting in 1the1 public 1[schools] school curriculum1 and supplementing chapter 35 of Title 18A of the New Jersey Statutes.        Be It Enacted by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:        1.    A 1[board of education] school district1 shall 1[include age-appropriate] incorporate1 instruction on 1[writing in cursive and on reading]1 cursive 1handwriting into the curriculum1 for students in grades 1[kindergarten] three1 through five.  The 1[instruction] curriculum1 shall include 1[learning]1 activities and 1[resources designed to ensure a student is able to read cursive documents and write] instructional materials that help students become proficient in reading cursive and legibly writing1 in cursive by the end of grade 1[three] five1.        2.    This act shall take effect immediately and shall first apply to the first full school year next following the date of enactment.
