AN ACT relating to education; requiring the board of trustees of each school district and the governing body of each charter school to establish curriculum for a workshop to promote the mental health of pupils which must be provided to pupils at least once per month; and providing other matters properly relating thereto. Legislative Counsel’s Digest: Existing law requires that certain instruction be provided in public schools. 1 (NRS 389.054-389.077) Section 1 of this bill requires the board of trustees of each 2 school district and the governing body of each charter school to: (1) establish an 3 age-appropriate curriculum for workshops to promote mental health; and (2) ensure 4 the workshop is provided to pupils in kindergarten and grades 1 to 12 each month. 5 Section 1 further: (1) requires the curriculum for such a workshop to be organized 6 and coordinated by school counselors, school psychologists, school social workers 7 or the school safety specialist for the school district; and (2) sets forth requirements 8 for the instruction and activities included in the workshop. 9 THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEMBLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. Chapter 389 of NRS is hereby amended by adding 1 thereto a new section to read as follows: 2 1. The board of trustees of each school district and the 3 governing body of each charter school shall establish the 4 – 2 – - *AB374* curriculum for a workshop to promote the mental health of pupils 1 enrolled in the school district or charter school. The curriculum 2 must be organized and, with the assistance of teachers, 3 administrators and other educational personnel, coordinated by 4 school counselors, school psychologists, school social workers or 5 the school safety specialist designated pursuant to NRS 388.910, 6 who shall provide instruction and activities designed to, in an age-7 appropriate manner: 8 (a) Promote positive mental health; 9 (b) Meet the immediate needs and concerns of each pupil, 10 whether the needs or concerns of the pupil require, without 11 limitation, counseling, consultation, referral or information; 12 (c) Provide individualized and positive feedback concerning 13 the academic performance of each pupil; and 14 (d) Provide related assistance and instruction as is deemed 15 necessary. 16 2. The board of trustees of each school district and the 17 governing body of each charter school shall ensure that the 18 workshop described in subsection 1 is provided: 19 (a) To pupils enrolled in kindergarten and grades 1 to 12, 20 inclusive, in each public school within the school district or in the 21 charter school, as applicable; 22 (b) During the school day; and 23 (c) At least once each month. 24 Sec. 2. The provisions of NRS 354.599 do not apply to any 25 additional expenses of a local government that are related to the 26 provisions of this act. 27 Sec. 3.
