AN ACT relating to days of observance; requiring the Governor to annually proclaim certain days to be “Diwali Day,” “Eid al-Fitr Day,” “Vaisakhi Day” and “Vesak Day” in the State of Nevada; and providing other matters properly relating thereto. Legislative Counsel’s Digest: Under existing law, various days, weeks and months of observance are 1 recognized in this State. (NRS 236.018-236.095) This bill requires the Governor to 2 annually proclaim certain days to be “Diwali Day,” “Eid al-Fitr Day,” “Vaisakhi 3 Day” and “Vesak Day” in the State of Nevada. 4 THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEMBLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. Chapter 236 of NRS is hereby amended by adding 1 thereto the provisions set forth as sections 2 to 5, inclusive, of this 2 act. 3 Sec. 2. 1. The Governor shall annually proclaim the 4 fifteenth day of the eighth month of the Hindu calendar to be 5 “Diwali Day” in the State of Nevada. 6 – 2 – - *AB82_R1* 2. The proclamation may call upon the news media, 1 educators, business and labor leaders and appropriate 2 governmental officers to bring to the attention of the residents of 3 Nevada the diversity and inclusion of the cultures that celebrate 4 Diwali in the State of Nevada and throughout the world. 5 Sec. 3. 1. The Governor shall annually proclaim the first 6 day of the tenth month of the Islamic calendar to be “Eid al-Fitr 7 Day” in the State of Nevada. 8 2. The proclamation may call upon the news media, 9 educators, business and labor leaders and appropriate 10 governmental officers to bring to the attention of the residents of 11 Nevada the diversity and inclusion of the cultures that celebrate 12 Eid al-Fitr in the State of Nevada and throughout the world. 13 Sec. 4. 1. The Governor shall annually proclaim the first 14 day of the month of Vaisakh of the Sikh calendar to be “Vaisakhi 15 Day” in the State of Nevada. 16 2. The proclamation may call upon the news media, 17 educators, business and labor leaders and appropriate 18 governmental officers to bring to the attention of the residents of 19 Nevada the diversity and inclusion of the cultures that celebrate 20 Vaisakhi in the State of Nevada and throughout the world. 21 Sec. 5. 1. The Governor shall annually proclaim the day of 22 the first full moon in the month of May to be “Vesak Day,” also 23 known as “Buddha Day,” in the State of Nevada. 24 2. The proclamation may call upon the news media, 25 educators, business and labor leaders and appropriate 26 governmental officers to bring to the attention of the residents of 27 Nevada the diversity and inclusion of the cultures that celebrate 28 Vesak in the State of Nevada and throughout the world. 29 Sec. 6.
