No. 7037 Page 1 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 23 24 STATE OF OKLAHOMA 1st Session of the 59th Legislature (2023) HOUSE BILL 2516 By: Pittman AS INTRODUCED An Act relating to schools; permitting Adulting 101 to be taught as an ele ctive course in public schools as funding becomes available; l isting areas of instruction; allowing school district to provide instruction for certain grades; authorizing district to determine timing for instruction; permitting partnership to assist in Adulting 1 01 instruction; providing for integration of instructio n in existing course; authorizing instruction in person, virtually or both; specifying specialized teaching certification is not required; requiring certain standards for implementation; providing for codification; and providing an effective date . BE IT ENACTED BY THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF OKLAHOMA: SECTION 1. NEW LAW A new section of law to be codified in the Oklahoma Statutes as Section 11-103.15 of Title 70, unless there is created a duplication in numbering, reads as follows: A. Subject to the availability of funding and in addition to personal financial literacy education required by the Passport to Financial Literacy Act, Adulting 101 may be taught as an elective course in the public schools of this state. Nutrition programs, including cooking; 2. Automobile maintenance; 3. Household repairs; 4. First aid; 5. Etiquette, social interaction and interpersonal skills; 6. Professional development, including applying and interviewing for jobs, resume writing and college readiness; 7. Basic financial skills, including understanding cred it scores and the path to home ownership; 8. Career pathways, including college, trade schools , vocational programs and licensing and certificate programs; 9. State and local government; 10. Self-discipline and time management; and 11. Basics of mental hea lth, including stress management techniques. B. School districts may provide instruction i n Adulting 101 to students during grades six through twelve. School districts may determine when each area of instruction listed in subsection A of this section may be presented to students. The school district may partner with the career and technology education system to assist in teaching Adulting 101. C. The conditions of thi s section can be accomplished through a Family and Consumer Science course at the school district. If a school district does not have a Family and Consumer Science course , Req. The instruction may be offered to students attending school in person, virtually or a hybrid of both. Specialized certification shall not be required for teachers who are providing Adulting 101 instruct ion. D. Schools shall follow Leading, Engaging, Advocating, Developing Family and Consumer Sciences Education (LEAD FCS) Standards to implement the course. SECTION 2.
