Authorizes district school boards to take specified actions to facilitate the creation and use of maker spaces. A BILL FOR AN ACT Relating to maker spaces. Be It Enacted by the People of the State of Oregon: SECTION 1. Section 2 of this 2025 Act is added to and made a part of ORS chapter 332. SECTION 2. (1) A district school board may facilitate the creation and use of maker spacesby: (a) Making available areas in schools for use during nonschool hours by people with shared interests, especially in computing or technology, so that the people can gather to work on projects while sharing ideas, equipment and knowledge; (b) Charging no more than the necessary costs related to providing safe and trained oversight for the areas described in paragraph (a) of this subsection; (c) Entering into agreements to provide to the school district an interest in a patent, as provided by ORS 332.745, in exchange for use of the area described in paragraph (a) of this subsection if the area had been provided at less than market value; and (d) Coordinating with nonprofit organizations to provide equipment, personnel and re- sources for use in areas described in paragraph (a) of this subsection. (2) The Department of Education, in consultation with the Department of Justice, shall compile and make available to school districts guidelines for the best practices of making available an area described in subsection (1)(a) of this section.
