Texas State Representative

Cody Vasut

Biography

Representative Cody Vasut serves the people of House District 25 in Texas, representing parts of southern and western Brazoria County. A conservative by political affiliation, Vasut was inspired by his family's legacy of community service, stemming from a long lineage of Texans and locals who served their community. His educational background is robust, having graduated summa cum laude from Texas A&M University with degrees in Business Administration and Management, followed by a Juris Doctor degree, also summa cum laude, from the University of Houston Law Center.

Before entering public service, Vasut spent over a decade as an attorney with a focus on business law, particularly within the oil and gas sector, as well as personal injury and employment litigation. His extensive legal experience helps inform his approach to legislation, particularly within the committees he serves: as Vice Chair of the Business & Industry Committee and as a member of the Judiciary & Civil Jurisprudence Committee.

Vasut's legislative efforts include several bills that reflect his priorities and values. He was co-author of House Bill 2615, which aims to create a foundation and trade diploma program within Texas school districts to provide vocational training for high school students. This initiative is designed to align educational outcomes with labor market needs, helping to reduce dropout rates and better equip students for their future careers.

In the domain of taxation, Vasut has shown a keen interest in restructuring the state's tax framework, as evidenced by his involvement with House Bill 56, which proposes the elimination of ad valorem taxes. This measure aims to address the financial mechanisms by which local governments operate, creating a joint interim committee to explore replacement revenue solutions, emphasizing a desire for lower tax burdens for constituents. However, this also raises concerns about potential impacts on local services that rely on such funding.

Vasut is actively involved in commemorative resolutions as well, such as HCR 28 in honor of the late E.J. "Joe" King, a figure of significant influence in Brazoria County's law enforcement. This resolution reflects Vasut's commitment to acknowledging local heroes and fostering community engagement.

Additionally, Vasut's commitment to serving vulnerable populations is evidenced through his deep pro-life values and support of initiatives aimed at aiding families and children. He serves on the Board of Directors for the Pregnancy Help Center of Brazosport, demonstrating a hands-on approach to issues he advocates for in the legislature.

Balancing his professional responsibilities and public service, Vasut maintains a family-oriented life. He resides in Angleton with his wife, Kate, and their three children, actively participating in their community through their church, where he serves not just as a parishioner but also as a lay preacher and musician.

Cody Vasut's political leanings are characterized by a commitment to conservative principles, as demonstrated through his advocacy for tax reform aimed at reducing the burden on property owners, support for vocational education, and focus on community service. His legislative initiatives position him as a representative who aligns closely with the values of fiscal conservatism and community-focused governance, fostering an environment that promotes educational and economic growth while advocating for the social welfare of families and children.
