CELEBRATING THE 9TH ANNUAL "PHYSICIAN AN ESTHESIOLOGISTS WEEK" ON
JANUARY 29TH THROUGH FEBRUARY 4, 2023, IN THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND

WHEREAS, Physician anesthesiologists are guardians of patient safety in health care in 1
the operating room, in the delivery room, in the intensive care unit, in pain management clinics, at 2
the United States Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), and on the front lines of the COVID-19 3
pandemic; and 4
WHEREAS, The twelve to fourteen years of education and 12,000 to 16,000 hours of 5
training physician anesthesiologists receive prepare them to navigate life-and-death moments and 6
help ensure patients receive the highest quality care; and 7
WHEREAS, Physician anesthesiologists were made for this moment, playing a critical 8
role in keeping patients safe in this state and community, whether caring for COVID-19 patients, 9
managing a crisis during surgery or labor and delivery, or providing pain management; and 10
WHEREAS, The Anesthesia Care Team model, led by physician anesthesiologists, is 11
widely recognized as the gold standard of care used in all of the nation’s top hospitals and in the 12
Veterans Administration to protect patients and the nine million Veterans who have served our 13
country; and 14
WHEREAS, Physician anesthesiologists are recognized leaders who are committed to 15
high quality and safe patient care, educating patients on anesthesia safety and reducing risks of 16
complications before, during, and after surgery; now, therefore be it 17
RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island hereby 18
celebrates the 9th annual "Physician Anesthesiologists Week" on January 29th through February 19

4th, 2023, and urges all citizens to join in recognizing physician anesthesiologists, who serve as 1
critical care specialists and work to greatly improve the safety of anesthesia and the well-being of 2
surgical patients, Veterans, and chronic pain patients each day; and be it further 3
RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to 4
transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to The American Society of Anesthesiologists. 5
