EXPRESSING DEEPEST CONDOLENCES ON THE P ASSING OF                                
CHARLES ALBERT GREEN E

WHEREAS, It is with deepest condolences that this House has learned of the passing of 1 
Charles Greene. He was born in Exeter, on property known as “Town Farm”, and was the son of 2 
the late William Greene and Vera Linear. He later married the love of his life, the late Evelyn 3 
Greene, and lived the rest of his life in the home they built on South County Trail in Exeter; and 4 
WHEREAS, As a youngster, Mr. Greene attended a one room schoolhouse known as 5 
“Hall School” on Ten Rod Road, from the 1st grade through the 8th grade. At the age of 15, he 6 
left school to work for the Turf Farm at the University of Rhode Island, and proceeded to 7 
establish a reputation for himself as a hard-working and diligent worker. Over the years, he 8 
worked tirelessly and strove daily to provide for his family and loved ones in numerous 9 
occupations which included working at a dairy farm at the University of Rhode Island, driving a 10 
milk truck for Wallace Foster, and later beginning his own successful construction business that 11 
operated in Rhode Island and Massachusetts. He even installed sod at Fenway Park at one time; 12 
and 13 
WHEREAS, Years later, Mr. Greene became a Road Supervisor for the Town of Exeter, 14 
a position he held for many years, retiring in 1986. He supervised the building of the Town of 15 
Exeter Highway Garage and the purchase of the Town’s first payloader; and 16 
WHEREAS, Mr. Greene was always active in civic and community affairs. He was a past 17 
member of the Kingston Fire Department and the Exeter Volunteer Fire Company #1, where his 18 
grandson Scott serves today as the Fire Chief. He also previously served as a Town Constable for 19

the Town of Exeter, and was a past member of the Rhode Island Coon Hunter’s Association, Hill 1 
Tractor Pull Association and the SNEPTA Association; and 2 
WHEREAS, Mr. Greene loved sports and was active in many sporting activities 3 
throughout his life. He was a pitcher for his softball and baseball teams, drove a stock car at the 4 
Kingston Fair, and was one of the founders and Chairman of the Exeter Old Home Days, Inc. He 5 
enjoyed nothing more than watching his grandson and great-grandson pulling his tractors and 6 
trucks, and loved hunting at his camp in Guilford, Maine, where he spent many hunting seasons; 7 
and 8 
WHEREAS, Mr. Greene leaves behind his children, Patricia Linear Gavitt Whitford and 9 
her husband, Robert, Charles Greene, Jr., and Todd Greene. Her also leaves behind his 10 
grandchildren, Theresa Gardiner, Scott Gavitt, and his wife, Laura, Kimberley Greene, Lisa Gaut, 11 
Todd Greene, Jr., and his wife, Katie, and Kyle Greene, and his many step-grandchildren. He is 12 
also survived by his great-grandchildren, Ashley Linear, Amber Mae, Isabella Rose, Scott David, 13 
Jr., Kurt Russell, Zoie Elizabeth, and Zachary Mason, as well as his beloved grand-puppies, 14 
Wheelin and Darla. He was predeceased by his son-in-law and good friend David Gavitt; now, 15 
therefore be it 16 
RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island hereby 17 
expresses its deepest condolences on the passing of Charles Albert Greene; and be it further 18 
RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to 19 
transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to Patricia Linear Gavitt Whitford, Charles Albert 20 
Greene, Jr., and Todd Greene. 21
