COMMEMORATING “NATIONAL INFERTILITY AWARENESS WEEK” ON APRIL 23-29, 
2023, IN THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND

WHEREAS, According to the CDC, 1 in 8 couples have trouble getting pregnant or 1 
sustaining a pregnancy; and 2 
WHEREAS, The World Health Organization and American Medical Association define 3 
infertility as a disease; and 4 
WHEREAS, Infertility affects women and men equally and does not discriminate based 5 
on race, religion, sexual orientation, marital status or socioeconomic level; and 6 
WHEREAS, The LGBTQ community also faces challenges when building their families; 7 
and 8 
WHEREAS, All people challenged in their family building journey should have access to 9 
all family building options; and 10 
WHEREAS, Family building options include adoption and medical treatment, such as in 11 
vitro fertilization and third-party reproduction; and 12 
WHEREAS, Cost and lack of insurance coverage are barriers for many in our State to 13 
access the family building option they need; and 14 
WHEREAS, Raising awareness of infertility and the barriers faced by the family building 15 
community is the first step to removing these barriers; now, therefore be it 16 
RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island hereby 17 
joins RESOLVE: The National Infertility Association, and dedicated volunteers, health care 18 
professionals, and members of the infertility and family building community in commemorating 19

and participating in “National Infertility Awareness Week” in the State of Rhode Island; and be it 1 
further  2 
RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to 3 
transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Rhode Island RESOLVE: The National 4 
Infertility Association. 5
