RECOGNIZING AND CONGRATULATING THE M EMBERS AND COACH OF THE EAST
GREENWICH HIGH SCHOO L TEAM ON THEIR 1ST PLACE VICTORY AT THE 40TH
RHODE ISLAND ACADEMI C DECATHLON

WHEREAS, The Rhode Island Academic Decathlon was co-founded by John Howell, 1
publisher of the Warwick Beacon, in December of 1983, and is open to all public, private and 2
parochial high schools in Rhode Island; and 3
WHEREAS, This rigorous competition tests the brain power and overall knowledge and 4
thinking skills of high school entrants from across the state, in subject areas ranging from science 5
to art to math, as well as speech, interview, and essay writing; and 6
WHEREAS, The Decathlon includes both a team competition component and awards 7
Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals to distinguish individuals for their outstanding achievements. 8
With an astounding score of more than 30,000 points, East Greenwich High School took home 9
the first-place team honors. This is the second year in a row that EGHS has earned top place; and 10
WHEREAS, Winning team members include: Rishi Gokhale, Raj Vishnu, Will Penhall, 11
Cooper Jones, Bridget Wexler and Zalmay Ahmed who earned gold medals in art, music, and 12
social studies, silver in literature and math, and bronze in science, Emmett Bassen-Alexander, 13
who earned gold medals in music and art, silver in math, and bronze in literature, and Sunny 14
Wang, who earned silver medals in economics and music; and 15
WHEREAS, In addition, East Greenwich team coach, Ben Revkin received the 16
Augustine Capotosto, Jr. Award. He also received accolades from his team members who 17
credited Coach Revkin with "our team's success in large part to him" and with his ability to steer 18
team members toward studying and his vast knowledge and experience; and 19

WHEREAS, It is essential and fitting to recognize our youth and to celebrate their 1
accomplishments. The East Greenwich Team members exemplify everything that young people 2
can achieve, and they are truly deserving of our recognition and praise; now, therefore be it 3
RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island hereby 4
congratulates the East Greenwich High School team winners and their coach for their victory at 5
the 2023 Rhode Island Academic Decathlon. We moreover wish them much happiness and 6
success in all their future endeavors; and be it further 7
RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to 8
transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Mr. Ben Revkin, Coach of the Academic 9
Decathlon Team for East Greenwich High School. 10
