HONORING THE RHODE ISLAND GERMAN AMERIC AN CULTURAL SOCIETY AND
THE 25TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE MERGER OF THE GERMAN DRAMATIC SOCI ETY
OF OLNEYVILLE AND THE EINTRACHT SINGING SOCIETY OF PAWTUCKET

WHEREAS, The German American Cultural Society was created in 1998 when the 1
German Dramatic Society of Olneyville and the Eintracht Singing Society of Pawtucket merged 2
and were chartered as a cultural/social society in the State of Rhode Island; and 3
WHEREAS, The original groups had been formed more than 100 years earlier with the 4
primary purpose of assisting the assimilation process of newly arrived German immigrants into 5
the fabric of American society, and to help the larger general American population learn about 6
and develop an appreciation of German customs, traditions, costumes, drama and musical history; 7
and 8
WHEREAS, Today, the German American Cultural Society presents an assortment of 9
yearly festivals and events including an annual Oktoberfest, the Society's main event, featuring 10
delectable German food, exquisite German music and, of course, delicious German beer. The 11
Society also celebrates Weinlesefest, the harvesting of grapes and the making of wine, 12
Schlachtfest, a festival event which includes the auctioning off of various parts of a pig, and two 13
Liederabende, which are presented by the men's and ladies' chorus during the year and feature a 14
variety of classical and folk German songs; and 15
WHEREAS, The German American Cultural Society has a beautiful and historic 16
clubhouse, which is the only dance hall entirely constructed of wood in Rhode Island. It was 17
primarily designed for ballroom dancing and has superb acoustics, a large stage, and striking 18
architecture; now, therefore be it 19

RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island hereby 1
honors the Rhode Island German American Cultural Society and the 25th Anniversary of the 2
merger of the German Dramatic Society of Olneyville and the Eintracht Singing Society of 3
Pawtucket; and be it further 4
RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to 5
transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to the Rhode Island German American Cultural 6
Society. 7
