Title 31 of the General Laws entitled "MOTOR AND OTHER VEHICLES" 1 is hereby amended by adding thereto the following chapter: 2 CHAPTER 34.2 3 RIDESHARE VEHICLE SURCHARGE 4 31-34.2-1. Rideshare vehicle surcharge. 5 (a) Each rideshare company shall collect a surcharge which shall be added to the fare 6 charged to each customer. 7 (b) The surcharge shall be seventy-five cents ($0.75) per fare. 8 (c) The total amount of surcharge collections shall be remitted to the State of Rhode Island, 9 and fifty percent (50%) of the surcharge collections shall be deposited in a restricted account to be 10 used for street infrastructure improvements in the municipality where the fare originated, and fifty 11 percent (50%) of the surcharge collections shall be deposited in a restricted account to be used as 12 funding for implementation of Transit Forward RI as adopted by the state planning council. 13 (d) The tax administrator shall promulgate rules and regulations necessary to implement 14 the provisions of this chapter. 15 (e) All disbursements and expenditures of funds from the restricted accounts subject to the 16 provisions of this section shall be by appropriation of the general assembly. 17 LC000601 - Page 2 of 3 SECTION 2. This act shall take effect upon passage. 1 ======== LC000601 ======== LC000601 - Page 3 of 3 EXPLANATION BY THE LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL OF A N A C T RELATING TO MOTOR AND OTHER VEHICLES -- RIDESHARE VEHICLE SURCHARGE *** This act would implement a seventy-five cent ($0.75) surcharge on fares charged by 1 rideshare companies. This act would also require that fifty percent (50%) of the surcharges be 2 deposited in a restricted account to be used for street improvements in the municipality where the 3 fare originated, and fifty percent (50%) of the surcharges be deposited in a restricted account to 4 fund Transit Forward RI. 5 This act would take effect upon passage. 6 ======== LC000601 ========
