MAKING AN APPROPRIATION OF $180,000 FOR THE RHODE ISLAND STATE
CONSERVATION COMMITT EE AND ITS THREE CONSERVATION DISTRICTS

WHEREAS, In 1944, the Rhode Island General Assembly established conservation 1
districts in order to direct programs to protect local renewable natural resources for the benefit of 2
Rhode Island and its people; and 3
WHEREAS, The Rhode Island State Conservation Committee was established as an 4
agency within the Department of Environmental Management, and consists of three Conservation 5
Districts, Eastern, Northern and Southern; and 6
WHEREAS, The three conservation districts main program areas are farmland viability, 7
farm conservation plans, water quality protection, environmental education and 8
landowner/producer outreach; and 9
WHEREAS, Funding is essential for the continuation of the Conservation Committee’s 10
efforts, including the one hundred eighty thousand dollars ($180,000) per year that would restore 11
the budget required, but not provided since 2006, to continue these essential services; now, 12
therefore be it 13
RESOLVED, That there is hereby appropriated, out of any money in the treasury not 14
otherwise appropriated for the fiscal year 2023-2024, the sum of one hundred eighty thousand 15
dollars ($180,000) for the Rhode Island State Conservation Committee and its three Conservation 16
Districts to be distributed as follows, thirty thousand dollars ($30,000) to the Rhode Island State 17
Conservation Committee, fifty thousand dollars ($50,000) to the Northern Rhode Island 18
Conservation District, fifty thousand dollars ($50,000) to the Southern Rhode Island 19

Conservation District, and fifty thousand dollars ($50,000) to the Eastern Rhode Island 1
Conservation District; and the state controller is hereby authorized and directed to draw his orders 2
upon the general treasurer for the payment of said sum, upon receipt of properly authenticated 3
vouchers. 4
