2023 -- S 0690 ======== LC002388 ======== S TATE OF RHODE IS LAND IN GENERAL ASSEMBLY JANUARY SESSION, A.D. 2023 ____________ S E N A T E R E S O L U T I O N RECOGNIZING AND CELEBRATING MARCH OF 2023 AS “NATIONAL READING MONTH” IN THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND Introduced By: Senators Paolino, E Morgan, de la Cruz, Rogers, and DeLuca Date Introduced: March 21, 2023 Referred To: Recommended for Immediate Consideration WHEREAS, The National Education Association launched "Read Across America" in 1 1998 as a year-round program to celebrate reading; and 2 WHEREAS, In honor of Dr. Seuss's birthday, March 2nd is designated as “Read Across 3 America Day” in the United States. This also commences "Read Across America Week" and the 4 month of March as "National Reading Month"; and 5 WHEREAS, Numerous efforts and events are organized during this time to inspire love 6 of reading among children and to motivate Americans of all ages to read every day; and 7 WHEREAS, Community and parental involvement is vital, as research shows that 8 children who read regularly, especially with adults, have greater success in school; and 9 WHEREAS. Reading is essential to everyday life, both inside and outside of the 10 classroom and has innumerable benefits including increasing vocabulary and comprehension 11 skills, stimulating brain activity and improving memory, and reducing stress; and 12 WHEREAS, Reading is a fundamental cornerstone to individual freedom and 13 empowerment, and sharing the power and joy of reading promotes a community of literacy, 14 knowledge and empathy; now, therefore be it 15 RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island hereby recognizes and 16 celebrates March of 2023 as “National Reading Month”; and be it further 17 RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to 18 transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Ms. Becky Pringle, President of the National 19 LC002388 - Page 2 of 2 Education Association. 1 ======== LC002388 ========
