CONGRATULATING THE WEST WARWICK PUBLIC LIBRARY ON BEING A FINALIST
FOR THE THIRD YEAR IN A ROW FOR THE NATIONAL MEDAL FOR MUSEU M AND
LIBRARY SERVICE FROM THE INSTITUTE OF MUSEUM AND LIBRARY SERV ICES,
AND BEING NAMED THE RHODE ISLAND “LIBRARY OF THE YEAR” BY THE
GRADUATE SCHOOL OF LIBRARY AND INFORMATION SERVICES AT THE
UNIVERSITY OF RHODE ISLAND

WHEREAS, The West Warwick Public Library’s mission statement is “to promote the 1
reading interests and life-long learning of the citizens of West Warwick and all other users by 2
providing free and open access to a variety of cultural, intellectual and information resources, 3
materials, and services”; and 4
WHEREAS, In furtherance of its mission, the West Warwick Public Library offers a 5
wide array of services including meeting rooms, study spaces, computer and Wi-Fi access, 6
English language classes, tech tutoring, digital career assistance, and other related services; and 7
WHEREAS, In recognition of the outstanding work the staff at the West Warwick Public 8
Library provides to the community, for the third year in a row it has been named as a finalist by 9
the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) in Washington D.C., for the National 10
Medal for Museum and Library Service, the nation’s highest honor given to museums and 11
libraries. Since 1986, this prestigious award has honored 182 institutions that “demonstrate 12
extraordinary and innovative approaches to public service.” In the words of IMLS Director 13
Crosby Kemper, “These institutions represent the best of what museums and libraries do for their 14
communities”; and 15
WHEREAS, The West Warwick Public Library was also honored to be named the Rhode 16
Island “Library of the Year” by the Graduate School of Library and Information Studies at the 17

University of Rhode Island; now, therefore be it 1
RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island hereby congratulates the West 2
Warwick Public Library for being named a finalist for the National Medal for Museum and 3
Library Service for the third year in a row, and for being named the Rhode Island “Library of the 4
Year” by the Graduate School of Library and Information Studies at the University of Rhode 5
Island; and be it further 6
RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to 7
transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Colin McCullough, Library Director, West 8
Warwick Public Library. 9
