Tikoian Date Introduced: May 03, 2023 Referred To: Placed on the Senate Consent Calendar WHEREAS, National Correctional Officers Week was first proclaimed on May 5, 1984, 1 by President Ronald Reagan when he signed Proclamation 5187 creating "National Correctional 2 Officers Week" to recognize the men and women who work in jails, prisons, and community 3 correctional fields across the country; and 4 WHEREAS, In 1996, The United States Congress officially changed this designation to 5 the "National Correctional Officers and Employees Week"; and 6 WHEREAS, National Correctional Officers and Employees Week has been designated as 7 the week of May 7 th through May 13 th , 2023, by the United States Department of Justice and the 8 Federal Bureau of Prisons; and 9 WHEREAS, National Correctional Officers and Employees Week honors the work of 10 correctional employees and correctional personnel for their service with honor, respect and 11 integrity; and 12 WHEREAS, National Correctional Officers and Employees Week raises the awareness of 13 the duties, hazards, and sacrifices made by correctional officers and employees; and 14 WHEREAS, National Correctional Officers and Employees Week in Rhode Island 15 recognizes employees of the Rhode Island Department of Corrections and the members of the 16 Rhode Island Brotherhood of Correctional Officers for their role in safeguarding the citizens of 17 the State by providing safe, secure, and humane incarceration of offenders within their custody; 18 now, therefore be it 19 LC002937 - Page 2 of 2 RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island hereby celebrates May 7 th 1 through May 13 th , 2023, as "National Correctional Officers and Employees Week" in the State of 2 Rhode Island; and be it further 3 RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to 4 transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to Wayne T.
