RELATING TO MOTOR AN D OTHER VEHICLES -- PASSING, USE OF LANES, AND 
RULES OF THE ROAD

It is enacted by the General Assembly as follows: 
SECTION 1. Section 31-15-9 of the General Laws in Chapter 31-15 entitled "Passing, Use 1 
of Lanes, and Rules of the Road" is hereby amended to read as follows: 2 
31-15-9. One way highways. 3 
(a) The state traffic commission may designate any highway or any separate roadway under 4 
its jurisdiction for one-way traffic and shall erect appropriate signs giving notice of one-way traffic. 5 
(b) Upon a roadway designated and signposted for one-way traffic a vehicle shall be driven 6 
only in the direction designated. Violations of this section are subject to fines enumerated in § 31-7 
41.1-4. 8 
(c) Violations of this section are subject to fines enumerated in § 31-41.1-4 If a motorist 9 
violates this section on an interstate highway or on an entrance or exit ramp connected to an 10 
interstate highway, the motorist shall be subject to a fine of up to five hundred dollars ($500) and 11 
license suspension of up to six (6) months. 12 
SECTION 2. This act shall take effect upon passage. 13

This act would add a provision in the statute relating to one way highways, providing an 1 
increased penalty when a motorist travels the wrong way on an interstate highway or an entrance 2 
or exit ramp connected to an interstate highway. 3 
This act would take effect upon passage. 4
