SB 572 – HB 982 FISCAL NOTE Fiscal Review Committee Tennessee General Assembly March 6, 2025 Fiscal Analyst: Natalie Dusek | Email: natalie.dusek@capitol.tn.gov | Phone: 615-741-2564 SB 572 – HB 982 SUMMARY OF BILL: Increases from $25,000 to $50,000, the jurisdictional dollar limit for general sessions courts in civil cases, subject to certain exceptions. FISCAL IMPACT: NOT SIGNIFICANT Assumptions: • Pursuant to Tenn. Code Ann. § 16-15-501(d)(1), the jurisdiction of general sessions courts extends to the sum of $25,000 in civil cases, in both law and equity. This does not apply to cases of forcible entry and detainer and actions to recover personal property, in which the court has unlimited original jurisdiction. • The proposed legislation increases the jurisdiction of general sessions courts from $25,000 to $50,000 in both law and equity civil cases. • Based on information provided by the Administrative Office of the Courts, any impact as a result of expanding the jurisdiction of general sessions courts can be absorbed within existing judicial resources. • Any fiscal impact to state or local government is therefore estimated to be not significant.
