The bill would amend the Code of Criminal Procedure to allow the attorney representing the state to request that the Texas Rangers assist local law enforcement with certain offenses alleged to have been committed by an elected officer of the political subdivision. If it does not receive the two-thirds vote necessary for immediate effect, the bill would take effect September 1, 2009. The Department of Public Safety indicates the Texas Rangers routinely conduct such investigations and provide assistance to local law enforcement, and therefore no significant fiscal impact to the state is expected.
