A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
AN ACT
relating to the designation of May 9 as Willie Velasquez Day.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
SECTION 1. Subchapter A, Chapter 662, Government Code, is
amended by adding Section 662.054 to read as follows:
Sec. 662.054. WILLIE VELASQUEZ DAY. (a) The 9th day of May
is Willie Velasquez Day in observance of the birthday of William
"Willie" Cardenas Velasquez, and in honor of his timeless and
invaluable contribution to the civil rights, suffrage, and
effective political participation of Mexican Americans in this
country, and to the promotion of the principles of representative
democracy for all people.
(b) Willie Velasquez Day shall be regularly observed by
appropriate ceremonies in the public schools and other places to
commemorate the birthday of William "Willie" Cardenas Velasquez.
SECTION 2. This Act takes effect September 1, 2009.
