The bill would amend Chapter 263, Family Code, to authorize the court to continue its jurisdiction over a child in the managing conservatorship of the Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS) after the child's 18th birthday under certain circumstances. DFPS indicates that it is already serving the population of young adults targeted by the bill so any additional workload should be small. The Department of Aging and Disability Services indicates that continuing the court's jurisdiction in certain cases would have no significant impact on its guardianship program. Local Government Impact Costs to the courts would vary depending on the number of such cases each court would handle;however, according to the Office of Court Administration, the fiscal implication would not besignificant.
