 CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
 WHEREAS, Professional social workers assist individuals,
 groups, and communities to restore or enhance their capacity for
 social functioning, while creating societal conditions favorable
 to their goals; and
 WHEREAS, Only those highly trained and experienced
 individuals who have earned social work degrees at the bachelor's,
 master's, or doctoral level, completed a required number of
 supervised hours in their particular field, and are licensed
 through the Texas State Board of Social Worker Examiners may be
 considered professional social workers; and
 WHEREAS, Social workers help people overcome some of life's
 most difficult challenges, including poverty, discrimination,
 abuse, addiction, physical illness, divorce, loss, unemployment,
 educational problems, disability, and mental illness to become
 independent and productive citizens; they help prevent crises and
 counsel individuals, families, and communities to cope more
 effectively with the stresses inherent in everyday life; and
 WHEREAS, Professional social workers may be found in every
 facet of community life--in schools, hospitals, mental health
 clinics, senior centers, elected office, private practice,
 prisons, military and corporate environments, and in numerous
 public and private agencies that serve individuals and families in
 need; now, therefore, be it
 RESOLVED, That the 81st Legislature of the State of Texas
 hereby designate April 27, 2009, as Social Work Day at the State
 Capitol and extend a warm welcome and sincere best wishes to the
 professional social workers and social work students present on
 this day for an enjoyable and memorable visit to Austin; and, be it
 further
 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
 prepared for the Texas Chapter of the National Association of
 Social Workers as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of
 Representatives and Senate.
