No. 1143 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, The 119th annual Brenham Maifest is being held May 8-9, 2009, and this spirited event promises great fun for all who attend; and WHEREAS, One of the oldest spring German festivals in the South, Maifest is a community-wide celebration that highlights the rich heritage of Brenham and Washington County; and WHEREAS, In addition to a parade and carnival, the event features a coronation of junior and senior kings and queens; this year's royal court includes junior queens Sally and Annie Cangelosi; the daughters of Rachel and Chris Cangelosi, they are in the fourth grade at Brenham Elementary School and are actively involved in sports, including soccer, softball, and basketball; the girls are also members of the Girl Scouts and St. Mary's Catholic Church; and WHEREAS, The 2009 junior kings are Jackson Bartay and Winston Walters; Jackson is the son of Ron and Lea Bartay, and he is a fourth grader at Brenham Elementary; he enjoys participation in the Washington County Little League, the Brenham Dolphins swim team, and the Washington County Youth Football League; Winston is a third grader at St. Paul's Christian Day School; the son of Val and Stacey Walters, he is active in Little League, youth soccer, and the Brenham Dolphins, and has also exhibited livestock at local, state, and national shows; and WHEREAS, The senior queen is Victoria Lehrmann, the daughter of Hollis and Elizabeth Lehrmann; a senior at Brenham High School and an academic all-star athlete, she is on the honor roll and the Cubette varsity softball team; she has also participated in volleyball, track, the Art Club, Spanish Club, Interact Club, 4-H, Girl Scouts, student council, debate team, Heritage Belles, and the Washington County Fair; a Girls State delegate, Ms. Lehrmann further serves as a member of the Washington County Youth Board; and WHEREAS, Senior king Marshall Haley is the son of Steve and Celia Haley; a senior at Brenham High, he is a member of the National Honor Society, Cub Pride, Interact Club, and Cub swim team, which he has captained for the past two years; he has attained the rank of Eagle Scout and is a student leader in Young Life; and WHEREAS, These young Texans can take pride in their participation in an enduring Washington County tradition, and Maifest is sure to provide many hours of enjoyment for Brenham residents and visitors alike; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas Legislature hereby commemorate the 119th annual Brenham Maifest, honor the celebration's junior and senior royalty, and extend to all those associated with the event sincere best wishes for another successful year.
