 R E S O L U T I O N
 WHEREAS, The mock trial team from Skyline High School in
 Dallas won the 30th annual Texas High School Mock Trial Competition
 over the weekend of March 7-8, 2009; and
 WHEREAS, Established by the Dallas Bar Association in 1979 as
 a citywide competition, the contest was expanded in 1980 to include
 teams from around the state of Texas; more than 4,500 students from
 over 200 Texas schools participate each year; and
 WHEREAS, In this year's competition, 24 teams from public and
 private schools around the state were selected to participate by
 200 judges and attorneys from the Dallas area; each team of 7 to 10
 students was presented with a case packet containing the
 particulars of the trial and given two hours to try the case before
 the judges; and
 WHEREAS, The first team from Dallas to win the statewide
 competition in 19 years, the Skyline team included Lauren Burgess,
 Morgan Burgess, Countess Dudley, Marissa Escamilla, Allyson
 LaFrance, Obed Manuel, Salvador Ortega, Cristian Perez, Diane
 Rivas, and Courtney Sanders, as well as alternate members Cendy
 Rodriguez, Susana Ayala, John Sanchez, and Maria Renteria; they
 were ably supported by coaches Joe Wicker and Dr. Martha Williams,
 and their victory in Dallas qualifies them to participate in the
 national mock trial competition in Atlanta, Georgia, in May; and
 WHEREAS, The continuing vitality of the legal profession in
 Texas depends in large part on the enthusiasm of young people for
 the study of the law and the pursuit of justice, and the members of
 the Skyline High School mock trial team may take great pride in
 their talent, hard work, and passion for the law; now, therefore, be
 it
 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
 Legislature hereby congratulate the members of the Skyline High
 School mock trial team for winning the state championship at the
 30th annual Texas High School Mock Trial Competition and extend to
 them sincere best wishes for continued success and a bright future;
 and, be it further
 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
 prepared for the Skyline mock trial team as an expression of high
 regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
