No. 2044 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Larry Edward Coker has been named the first head football coach for The University of Texas at San Antonio, and his arrival signals the start of an exciting new era in the university's athletic program; and WHEREAS, Best known for his tenure as head coach at the University of Miami from 2001 to 2006, Larry Coker draws on 36 years of coaching experience and can list among his accomplishments winning the NCAA Division I-A national championship during the 2001-2002 season; and WHEREAS, Coach Coker began his involvement in college football as a player at Northeastern State University in Oklahoma and earned bachelor's and master's degrees from the school; after coaching for eight years at the high school level, he became the quarterbacks and running backs coach at the University of Tulsa in 1979 and went on to prove his abilities in a range of assistant coaching positions at Oklahoma State, Oklahoma, and Ohio State over the course of the following 15 seasons; and WHEREAS, He joined the staff at the University of Miami as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 1995, and he took over as the Hurricanes head coach six years later; in his very first season at the helm, Miami went undefeated and captured the national championship; Coach Coker took his team back to the Bowl Championship Series title game the following year and posted an overall record of 60-15 during his six seasons at Miami, compiling an exceptional .800 winning percentage; and WHEREAS, Coach Coker will now put his expertise to work in building The University of Texas at San Antonio football program, and the institution's students, alumni, and supporters are justifiably excited to welcome this proven leader to the Roadrunner athletic program; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas Legislature hereby congratulate Larry Edward Coker on being named the first head football coach for The University of Texas at San Antonio and extend to him sincere best wishes for great success in the years ahead; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Coach Coker as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
