No. 225 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, The year 2009 marks the 100th anniversary of the Chamber of Commerce in Commerce, Texas, and this milestone provides a welcome opportunity to pay tribute to this admirable organization; and WHEREAS, On an August night in 1909, a group of Commerce businessmen gathered at the Knights of Pythias Hall at the request of Sterling Hart, publisher of the Commerce Journal; Hart's idea was to form a group to help boost commercial opportunities in the local area, and his colleagues were enthusiastic about the idea; that night, the Commerce Board of Trade was founded, and the organization later changed its name to the Commerce Chamber of Commerce; and WHEREAS, In the decades that followed its creation, the organization's forward-thinking members helped shepherd the town's ongoing growth and assisted local citizens in benefiting from new opportunities; the chamber also took a proactive stance in meeting challenges such as those posed by the Great Depression and urged residents to work together to achieve a brighter future; and WHEREAS, In more recent times, the Commerce chamber welcomed the arrival of new industries to the area and has continued its efforts to build beneficial links between local entrepreneurs; moreover, the group has been a tireless promoter of the city's many positive characteristics, including its excellent educational institutions and outstanding quality of life; and WHEREAS, The chamber has had a succession of productive leaders throughout its history; today, that tradition of service is continued by the officers and directors who oversee the initiatives that are carried out by the organization's 300 members; and WHEREAS, Great changes have taken place over the course of the past century, but the Commerce Chamber of Commerce has remained steadfast in its mission, and its members may take great pride in the group's rich history and many achievements; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas Legislature hereby congratulate the Commerce Chamber of Commerce on its 100th anniversary and extend to the chamber and its members sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the Commerce Chamber of Commerce as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
