No. 398 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Tommie Battles Owens of San Antonio commemorated a special milestone in her life with the celebration of her 80th birthday on October 31, 2008; and WHEREAS, Born in Cuero in 1928, the former Tommie Battles was the first child of Leslie and Dorothy Battles, and through the years her family grew to include eight siblings, Josephine, Nancy, Eddie, Leslie, Buddy, Edmund, Henry, and Samuel; she was raised by her grandmother and later by Bonnie and Euina Taylor; it was during her stay with the Taylor family that she developed a close bond of sisterhood with her younger cousin, Dora Taylor Jones; and WHEREAS, This esteemed Texan graduated from Daule High School in Cuero and later attended St. Philip's College in San Antonio; she was united in marriage to John H. Owens, Jr., and she became the mother of a beloved son, John; a hardworking single parent for many years, Mrs. Owens was employed for more than three decades by Wyatt's Cafeteria, where she eventually retired as chief cook; and WHEREAS, Also active in her community, Mrs. Owens has long been a faithful member of Zion Star Baptist Church; and WHEREAS, A caring and devoted woman, Tommie Owens has enriched the lives of her family members, neighbors, and fellow congregants, and she continues to bring joy and happiness to all who are privileged to know her; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas Legislature hereby honor Tommie Battles Owens on her 80th birthday and extend to her sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mrs. Owens as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
