No. 402 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, The Brownsville Independent School District has been recognized as the country's most improved urban school district with its receipt of the 2008 Broad Prize for Urban Education; and WHEREAS, Awarded annually, the Broad Prize honors large urban school districts that are judged to have the strongest student achievement and improvement while also narrowing performance gaps between income and ethnic groups; Brownsville was chosen as the 2008 prize winner from among five national finalists, with the selection being decided by a jury of 10 prominent leaders from the areas of government, education, business, and civic affairs; and WHEREAS, In singling out Brownsville ISD for this highly respected accolade, the jury noted the high performance of all the district's students in reading and math, the exceptional improvements made by Brownsville's Hispanic and low-income pupils between 2004 and 2007, and the strategic policies and practices put in place throughout the district; and WHEREAS, The Broad Prize includes $1 million in college scholarships that will be made available to graduating Brownsville seniors in 2009, with the funds going to students who demonstrate financial need and academic improvement; and WHEREAS, These scholarships will help further the admirable goal of providing students with the knowledge and skills they need to meet the challenges and opportunities of the future; that same mission is being carried out with great success by the teachers and administrators of Brownsville ISD, and their remarkable accomplishments are indeed deserving of this prestigious award; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas Legislature hereby congratulate the Brownsville Independent School District on winning the 2008 Broad Prize for Urban Education and extend to the district's educators, staff, and students sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the district as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
