 R E S O L U T I O N
 WHEREAS, Members of the Student Government and Alumni
 Associations of Stephen F. Austin State University are visiting the
 State Capitol on February 18, 2009, and this occasion provides a
 fitting opportunity to welcome them and to commemorate the 85th
 anniversary of this notable institution; and
 WHEREAS, Stephen F. Austin State University was established
 in 1923; that year, classes began on September 18, which also
 happened to mark the birthday of the university's first president,
 Dr. Alton W. Birdwell, and since then, more than 100,000 students
 have graduated from SFA; with six colleges that offer more than 80
 undergraduate majors in 120 areas of study, the institution
 features the breadth of a state university education while giving
 students the personal attention of a private school; in addition,
 the graduate programs at SFA include nearly 60 master's and two
 doctoral degrees; and
 WHEREAS, The Student Government Association at SFA enhances
 life on campus for about 12,000 students; as the voice of the
 student body, the organization hears its concerns and makes
 suggestions to university administrators; through its executive,
 judicial, and legislative branches, SGA passes legislation and
 works to ensure that the students' views are reflected in
 university policies; the group also sponsors campus-wide events,
 and it is a vital platform for the development of future political
 leaders; and
 WHEREAS, The SFA Alumni Association is another organization
 that contributes to the university community; active in more than
 20 chapters across the country, the alumni association is composed
 of former students and friends of the university; with special
 programs, scholarships, and activities, members of the group
 demonstrate their continued support and loyalty for their alma
 mater; and
 WHEREAS, Throughout its rich history, Stephen F. Austin State
 University has provided its students with an outstanding education
 and a solid foundation for achievement and in so doing, it has
 contributed to the prosperity of the Lone Star State; now,
 therefore, be it
 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
 Legislature hereby recognize February 18, 2009, as Stephen F.
 Austin State University Day at the State Capitol and extend a warm
 welcome to all those from the university who are visiting here
 today; and, be it further
 RESOLVED, That official copies of this resolution be prepared
 for the Student Government Association and the Alumni Association
 as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of
 Representatives.
