Cerna of the Harlandale Independent School District Board of Trustees has been elected vice president of the Mexican American School Board Association; and WHEREAS, Founded in 1970, MASBA advocates for quality public education for all students in the State of Texas; its membership includes school districts and education service centers, as well as their board members, trustees, and administrators; the association aims to increase parental and community participation in public governance, improve academic achievement, and promote equitable financing of schools; and WHEREAS, Mr. Cerna graduated from Mississippi State University with a bachelor's degree in microbiology and went on to work as a science teacher and coach at Harlandale High School; he was elected to the Harlandale school board in 2002 and has held a number of offices, including president; he earned master trustee designation through the Leadership TASB program of the Texas Association of School Boards and is a member of that organization's School Board Advocacy Network; and WHEREAS, In 2004, Mr. Cerna helped found the Bexar County School Boards' Coalition, an advocacy group for equal educational opportunities; in addition, this enthusiastic and caring educator is a member of the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials and a lifetime member of the Harlandale Council of PTAs; Mr. Cerna also gives generously of his time and talents to church organizations and as a grand knight for the Knights of Columbus Council No. 7409; and WHEREAS, A dynamic and dedicated leader, Joshua Cerna has demonstrated exceptional commitment to public education and to broadening the path of opportunity for all Texas schoolchildren; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas Legislature hereby commend Joshua J. Cerna for his efforts on behalf of public education and congratulate him on his election as vice president of the Mexican American School Board Association; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. Cerna as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
