No. 615 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Treatment providers and addiction professionals from across the Lone Star State are gathering in Austin on February 25, 2009, for Substance Abuse Prevention and Treatment Advocacy Day; and WHEREAS, According to the Department of State Health Services, more than 850,000 Texans over age 12 needed substance abuse treatment in 2007, and 1.8 percent of all state residents were dependent on or abused an illicit drug during that year; and WHEREAS, Committed to addressing this pervasive social problem, the Texas Association of Addiction Professionals, the Association of Substance Abuse Programs, and the Texas Summit Committee for Prevention began working together in 2005 and now represent approximately 4,000 licensed chemical dependency counselors in the state, as well as more than 60 community-based, nonprofit organizations; the coalition is hosting this year's Substance Abuse Prevention and Treatment Advocacy Day to provide a forum for discussing current substance abuse issues and to carry the message that prevention and treatment are vital initiatives for the state; and WHEREAS, The safety and well-being of Texas residents are issues of paramount importance, and the efforts of the prevention and treatment agencies are helping to ensure that all citizens have full access to the services that will help them lead healthier lives; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas Legislature hereby recognize February 25, 2009, as Substance Abuse Prevention and Treatment Advocacy Day at the State Capitol and encourage all Texans to learn more about this serious issue and the available resources in their communities.
