 R E S O L U T I O N
 WHEREAS, The Houston Independent School District Department
 of Library Services enriches the lives of many young Texans daily,
 helping students to become readers, gain access to valuable
 information, and become skilled in the use of electronic media
 resources; and
 WHEREAS, Striving to meet the educational needs of 200,000
 children citywide, the department is currently working to enhance
 school library collections and technology; and
 WHEREAS, More than 250 school librarians are employed by the
 district, and with the assistance of an Institute of Museum and
 Library Services grant, 29 teachers are preparing to become
 certified school librarians through Project: LIBS, the Librarian
 Initiative for Better Schools program; and
 WHEREAS, Committed to raising achievement standards, these
 notable educators manage valuable resources and promote reading,
 and they are supported in this vital goal by HISD Superintendent Dr.
 Abelardo Saavedra; and
 WHEREAS, Strong reading skills and an understanding of
 technology are crucial to academic success, and by helping to
 instill these abilities in children at a young age, the Houston ISD
 Department of Library Services is making a sound investment in the
 future of tomorrow's leaders; now, therefore, be it
 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
 Legislature hereby honor the Houston Independent School District
 Department of Library Services for its contributions to area youth
 and extend to the teachers embarking on librarian certification
 sincere best wishes for great success with their important work;
 and, be it further
 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
 prepared for the department as an expression of high regard by the
 Texas House of Representatives.
