LEGISLATIVE BUDGET BOARD Austin, Texas FISCAL NOTE, 81ST LEGISLATIVE REGULAR SESSION April 22, 2009 TO: Honorable Florence Shapiro, Chair, Senate Committee on Education FROM: John S. O'Brien, Director, Legislative Budget Board IN RE:SB2258 by Zaffirini (Relating to intensive summer programs for public school students and to college readiness programs at public institutions of higher education.), As Introduced No significant fiscal implication to the State is anticipated. The bill would separate the intensive summer programs under Texas Education Code section 29.098 into separate programs: a summer program for at-risk public education students administered by the Texas Education Agency (TEA), and grants to institutions of higher education for intensive programs directed at at-risk college students, awarded by the Higher Education Coordinating Board (HECB). Both TEA and HECB expect that the maintenance of funding currently received for the intensive summer programs in the 2008-09 biennium, and other funds identified by the bill, would be sufficient to fulfill the requirements of the bill. Local Government Impact No fiscal implication to units of local government is anticipated.
