This supervision requirement has been standard practice for providing psychological services for more than 40 years but has not been clearly defined in statute.    As proposed,  S.B. 484 prohibits a psychological associate from engaging in the practice of psychology unless the psychological associate practices under the supervision of a psychologist.   RULEMAKING AUTHORITY   This bill does not expressly grant any additional rulemaking authority to a state officer, institution, or agency.   SECTION BY SECTION ANALYSIS   SECTION 1. Amends Section 501.259, Occupations Code, by adding Subsection (c), to prohibit a psychological associate from engaging in the practice of psychology unless the psychological associate practices under the supervision of a psychologist.   SECTION 2. Effective date: September 1, 2009.

AUTHOR'S / SPONSOR'S STATEMENT OF INTENT

 

Licensed psychological associates are individuals with a master's degree who work under the supervision of a licensed psychologist. This supervision requirement has been standard practice for providing psychological services for more than 40 years but has not been clearly defined in statute. 

 

As proposed,  S.B. 484 prohibits a psychological associate from engaging in the practice of psychology unless the psychological associate practices under the supervision of a psychologist.

 

RULEMAKING AUTHORITY

 

This bill does not expressly grant any additional rulemaking authority to a state officer, institution, or agency.

 

SECTION BY SECTION ANALYSIS

 

SECTION 1. Amends Section 501.259, Occupations Code, by adding Subsection (c), to prohibit a psychological associate from engaging in the practice of psychology unless the psychological associate practices under the supervision of a psychologist.

 

SECTION 2. Effective date: September 1, 2009.
