No. 68 CONCURRENT RESOLUTION WHEREAS, The Legislature of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize the Twentieth Century Club in Lubbock on the grand occasion of its centennial anniversary; and WHEREAS, The Twentieth Century Club was formally organized in Lubbock in 1909 within months of the formation of the town; what began as a literary endeavor increasingly reflected the active involvement of the founders in all areas of civic affairs and community development; and WHEREAS, Among the club's most notable and lasting legacies is the library system whose foundation began with the first lending libraries of members who later formed the Lubbock Library Association; the club hired a librarian to maintain the collection and petitioned county commissioners for funding; and WHEREAS, The Twentieth Century Club actively supported the establishment of Texas Technological College, now Texas Tech University, in Lubbock and also began a student loan fund that later became part of the Paul Whitfield Horn Fellowship program; members of the club have also worked with the university as professors and staff; and WHEREAS, The influence of the Twentieth Century Club in Lubbock has been felt far and wide through its affiliation with such groups as the Federated Women's Club and its support of civic issues, charities, and literary and art promotion; and WHEREAS, Its significance is a reflection of the strength of its individual members who continue to give so generously of their time, energy, and resources to continue the traditions that began 100 years ago; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the 81st Legislature of the State of Texas hereby commend the members of the Twentieth Century Club of Lubbock for their many worthy endeavors and extend to them best wishes for a memorable centennial anniversary; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be prepared for the Twentieth Century Club to commemorate this historic occasion.
