                    SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 52
 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
 recognize the Dallas Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta
 Sorority, Incorporated, on the grand occasion of its Founders Day
 Celebration Gala; and
 WHEREAS, The Dallas Alumnae Chapter is commemorating its
 85th anniversary and the 96th year the international sorority has
 promoted human welfare through its many services and programs;
 and
 WHEREAS, The gala is being held at the Black Academy of
 Arts and Letters on January 31, 2009, and will feature
 recognition of the Dallas Alumnae Chapter's 50-year honorees,
 Dr. Velma Smith and Lynetta Haynes-Oliver, and this year's
 25-year honoree, Carolyn Hickman; and
 WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority was founded by 22
 undergraduate women at Howard University on January 13, 1913, to
 promote academic excellence and provide assistance to persons in
 need; the private, nonprofit organization now has some 200,000
 members in more than 900 chapters around the world; and
 WHEREAS, The Dallas Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta,
 founded in 1924, has a rich legacy of sisterhood, scholarship,
 and service; it is well known for its outstanding work with young
 women, encouraging them to pursue higher education, develop good
 communications skills, and serve their communities; and
 WHEREAS, From providing services for the poor and elderly
 to collaborating with other organizations to promote personal
 well-being, affordable housing, and economic development, the
 Dallas Alumnae Chapter has truly made a positive impact in the
 community; it was recognized as the 2008 Women's Council of
 Dallas Organization of the Year; now, therefore, be it
 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
 Legislature, hereby commend the members of the Dallas Alumnae
 Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, for their
 many worthy endeavors and extend to them best wishes for an
 outstanding Founders Day Celebration Gala; and, be it further
 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
 them as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
